Summary Description

A low and simple building with a North aisle and vestry. Originally a chapel of ease the present church was consecrated in 1535 (there are remains of ancient murals on the south wall). A number of Georgian windows (including the arched East window) are the only external clue to the ornate style of the interior. The beautiful plasterwork and the George III coat of arms are variously dated as late 18th to early 19th century; the dates are from the guide book and Pevsner respectively. The ceiling includes fine plaster reliefs and cherubs’ faces. The North aisle and Vestry were added in 1830 by Stansfield Rawson; who also donated the Sanctuary panelling, pulpit and lectern which were salvaged from York Minster after the 19th century fire. The East window is by the well known firm of Shrigley and Hunt and depicts ‘Resurrection Morning’ and commemorates those who lost their lives in the Great War.
