Summary Description

St Peter ad Vincula in Coggeshall, Essex, is one of a group of oversized churches built following the success of the early wool-trade in the East Anglia area. It is Grade I listed. The building now standing was completed in the first quarter of the 15th Century, and sits on a site where both Saxon and Norman churches stood previously. When the nearby church at Markshall was demolished in 1933 then some works were moved to this church including the monument to Mary Honywood which is now in the sacristy. It has an excellent website, a choir and is an active community. The church shelters a maternity roost of Natterer's bats and soprano pipistrelles. Whle the bats cause mess, the church has a good relationship with Essex Bat Group and has held several successful bat evenings. It was part of the Bats in Churches project 2018-23.
