Summary Description

The church of St. Columba has a particularly unusual bell tower built over the entrance with wide segmental arches to the belfry between four rectangular piers and surmounted by a short slate clad spire in turn finished with a weather cock. All the masonry is rock faced with walling stone laid random coursed. The quoins and voussoirs are also rock faced but worked to a tight bed joint. There is a simple tooled string course below window cill level. Copings are tooled and the returns to the entrance openings are also tooled. Windows have simple leaded lights of plain glass supported by robust forged iron grilles. The roof is of slate laid in random and diminishing courses. The ‘grotesque’ character is carried through in the interior with the chancel arch, vestry arch and entrance arch constructed of rock faced voussoirs. Internal surfaces are plain plastered. The church is built to a simple plan with large Nave and shallow Sanctuary with Porch and Vestry at the south east corner. The roof structure is exposed, carried on braced collar tie trusses. There are no fixed pews. The west end of the nave has been re-arranged to provide an area for meetings and activities. There is a toilet off the Vestry. The church was designed by W.D. Caroe 1905.
