Summary Description

A late C11th church incorporating elements of an Anglo-Saxon structure at the west end with C12th, C13th and C14th additions and alterations and extensively restored and altered in the C19th by William Butterfield. The substantial tower of early C13th seems likely to have had a defensive role. The re-building of the upper floor and roof date from the 1864-76 restoration. External masonry varies considerably in style according to the build period. The tower and north wall are of coarsely squared block of a range of colours with irregular quoins. A blocked Saxon window above the blocked north door suggests Saxon origin of these parts of the structure. The C14th south wall to the south aisle has finely jointed ashlar block of uniform grey/buff sandstone. C19th Vestry/Organ Chamber extension and re-building work is generally in rock faced random coursed ashlar between tooled quoins and window surrounds. The porch was largely rebuilt in the C19th. Internally there is a profusion of detail of various periods with the aisle colonnades of Norman detailing with waterleaf capitals carrying semi-circular arches, C13th Chancel Arch, Early English font, C14th tomb of Sir Thomas de Burgh, vesica piscis window of 1323 and stained glass windows of interest. Stained glass windows are by Cox & Buckley and Sons and Alexander Gibbs . The east window is in memory of John Wordsworth, son of the poet and vicar of Brigham for 40 years. There are four different stencilled Victorian ceilings in the church.
