Summary Description

The church is distinctive because of its external massing and the use of the local red sandstone. It was designed by T.Lewis Banks of Whitehaven in 1880; in the Early English style it includes original elements from an earlier church on the site which dated from 1220. Examples of re-used material include the chancel side lancet windows. The Quinquennial Report also states that the “faculty for the demolition of the previous church, dated 27.7.1880 refers to part of the north wall being retained” suggesting that the foundations here, at least, may be from the earlier church. The tower is taller than envisaged by Banks as in 1901 it was raised by 42 feet to a design by Oliver and Dodgshun of Carlisle and includes a ring of eight bells. The interior is an excellent space; large, light and airy but with distinctive narrow aisles. Pevsner mentions the west doorway from the earlier church being reconstructed in the churchyard but this was not found. The apsidal baptistery is happily expressed on the west front and the font itself is an unusual design of kneeling angel supporting a scallop shell bowl.
