Summary Description

Cleator church is first recorded during the reign of Henry I and the present chancel dates from that time but there is possibly even earlier evidence of a building phase (c. 432) in the base of some walls. Restoration took place in the 15th century and again in 1792, 1841 and 1900. Today the building appears as one complete composition of 1900, however, some of the detail is obviously original and not an attempt to recreate earlier craftsmanship in the Arts and Crafts tradition. Built of red sandstone and designed by J.H Martindale of Carlisle, it is extremely attractive and enhanced by its ‘secret garden’ setting reached along a lane from the village. Work is ongoing to eradicate problems with dry rot but this has revealed the use of concrete in the last restoration. There are beautiful details to be found everywhere including internal fittings of iron and timber; truly reflecting the Arts and Crafts attention to detail. Of note is the hammer beam roof and the stained glass is an attractive and complimentary addition.
