Summary Description

This building is of 1842 and by E. Sharpe with elements of its design exhibiting the "battle of the styles" between the classical and the Gothic; the exterior is recognisable as Medieval but with inaccuracies whilst many of the interior fittings like box pews and the gallery are distinctly Georgian. The exterior is not particularly successful and Pevsner claims that the pinnacles on the tower are clumsy and that the chancel is too short. The interior is, perhaps, better designed and is a simple space, cruciform in plan, with a large East window. This three light window, which displays scenes from the life of Jesus, is a memorial to Thomas Irwin of Calder Abbey, and Justus Town, who built the Church. It was designed by Henry Holiday. The interior is enlivened by the candle sconces fixed to the walls.
