Summary Description

Immediately recognisable as a design by Austin and Paley and definitely one of their finest commissions in the area, there is typical detailing much in evidence here. Architectural themes are picked up throughout the building and continue to also include the design of the Lych-gate. There is a spirited handling of even the most mundane of architectural details. The pink sandstone is expressed internally and adds another dimension to the spaces. The Arts and Crafts movement is reflected here with the architect being involved in every element of the design, including the fixtures and fittings. Unlike some earlier churches, which are a mixture of styles and periods, St Peter's is a holistic approach in design terms and retains many of the original features; note the font of Dent fossil marble with an acorn decorating the timber cover. St Peter's is unusual in having no fewer than three fonts, one of which came from the earlier chapel. The east window is in beautiful muted colours and is by Kempe. The organ by Foster and Andrews of Hull is considered to be remarkably fine for so small a church.
