Summary Description

A typical and ancient Lakeland church, constructed of rubble masonry with a square tower, it is now unfortunately rendered with hard cement. Consecrated in 1578 and enlarged 25 years later, it has been much altered since; however, there is still evidence of the original building phase. . The straight-headed windows could be of that date and the roof timbers appear early and even show signs of re-use. The bowl of the Font is thought to come from an earlier Chapel on this site and dates from the 15th century. The timber communion rail is early eighteenth century and there is an ancient bell, hanging in the tower, dating to the fourteenth century. The bell is probably from Conishead Priory on its dissolution and is apparently of great interest to campanologists. There is also a silver chalice dated 1571, known as the Coulton Treasure, which was presented by Archbishop Edwin Sandys when he consecrated the church in 1578. A pitch-pipe still exists, often used to give the note when there was no organ. The church was thoroughly restored in 1890 when early pews and a three-decker pulpit were removed.
