Summary Description

You are struck, when you approach the church, by its prominent position and the commanding views overlooking the village, towards Morecambe Bay. St Mary’s most significant feature is perhaps its inclusion in the ‘group value’ of church, school and vicarage; built as a single composition. The church was designed by E.G Paley of Paley and Austin, who designed many churches in the Diocese from the mid 19th into the 20th century. Built of rock faced limestone with sandstone ashlar dressings there is a polygonal bell turret. There is very little evidence in this particular composition of the inventive detailing often associated with Paley and Austin; however, the plate tracery should be mentioned with the carved, gargoyle heads at the ends of the hood moulds. A features of note is the east window, commemorating the First World War, which Pevsner attributes to Morris & Co; although, there can be no association with William Morris himself.
