Summary Description

The first church on the site was founded in 1511 by Thomas Birkhede but the present building is of 1743 with extensions of 1878-9. The benefactor of 1743, Robert Bateman a marble merchant, was described in a poem by Wordsworth as ‘wondrous rich’ and it is his marble that paves the church floor. The poem by Wordsworth is on a brass plaque in the church and commemorates the last restoration. It has rubble walls with sandstone dressings with the incongruous addition of flaming torches surmounting the tower parapet. The oversized cherub heads of the font also sit uncomfortably with the baluster base. The wooden door lock of 1682 is an unusual find and is perhaps reused from the earlier church. The intricate carving of the Reredos/ lectern and pulpit is by William Fell of Applethwaite who also carved his own portrait here in 1910. The Cup and Cover Paten of 1634 are still in use.
