Summary Description

Records indicate Christian associations with this area, perhaps specifically this site, as early as the C6, though the ribbon development setting now obscures appreciation of this. RCHME dates a Scandinavian influenced cross, fragments of which were rescued and put on display, at C10. The tower base is of C12, built sturdily perhaps to withstand waves of raiders into this no-man’s-land. Curiously, everything in the nave is off-set: the Norman arch to the tower, the roof, and the south arcade, now enclosed at the east in a (clearly) late C20 partition forming a meeting room. The north aisle east chapel has panels dated 1628 commemorating the ‘Fundator’. Indeed, every aspect and space seems crammed with interest, mystery or furniture (especially the pews, each with individually carved gables), crowding around the Jacobean pulpit and one of three fonts where things become quite a jumble, exacerbated by steps – but perhaps that is its epithet.
