Summary Description

A surprisingly substantial church with an array of ancillary facilities: a ‘community of buildings’ huddled together, the greater at the centre and the lesser gathered round, all set in a suitably large churchyard on a corner site. The verticality of the many pinnacles and buttresses contrasts with the horizontal grain of local slate walling. In the very ‘safe’ Decorated tradition for a civic church for a growing community, it reserves artistic flair for finer detail inside: foliated decoration on font, arcade columns and string courses, carried into some of the oak furnishings. The north aisle was partitioned off in the 1980s – a practical measure with so much space available, the panelling of which is much lighter and plainer than its hundred-year-older counterparts. A wide variety of stained glass from a wide variety of hands, much of which is commemorative.
