Summary Description

It is suggested that the church has very early origins because the restoration of 1909 revealed the ‘Tunwini’ cross, which may be as early as the 7th century. The roof trusses are kingposts with arch braces and struts and have carved on them the date of 1598; the timbers also exhibit evidence of the inserted Georgian ceiling (taken down in 1900-1910 when the plaster was also removed from the walls). Here, once again, we see an ancient church that has a greater significance because of the modifications to the fabric over time. There is a late Georgian gallery at the west end and miraculously a three-decker pulpit with a later tester which is part of the abundance of timber fittings by the famous Camden Guild. Most impressive is the oak Reredos (which includes a painting by the local artist James Cranke (b. 1707), the choir stalls and rood beam and all with fine carving; specific items are by Alec Miller (1879- 1961) and it is this association with C.R. Ashbee that heightens the significance of the church. Some of the more mundane yet practical features are also worthy of note including the Arts & Crafts influenced door locks.
