Summary Description

The architect Paley restored the church in c. 1864 but the buildings origins are much earlier. There is a Norman south doorway although Pevsner claims this is “neither in situ nor complete” due to its present surround. There are Perpendicular elements including the piers, arches and the clerestory which makes a positive contribution to the spirit of the interior space. The church has undergone many alterations over the centuries with many of these alterations documented; the tower is of 1542 when a gale destroyed its predecessor; a major restoration involved the lengthening of the chancel in 1904 by Austin and Paley and in 2008 a re-ordering included a new kitchen/servery, toilets, sound and audio-visual system, creche area at the foot of the tower, spotlighting of the chancel and other areas, improved heating and new boiler, full rewiring, the replacement of the Victorian cathedral style entrance with new doors inside and out and an enlarged welcome area (repositioning the font to the base of the tower), the replacement of the chancel screen with an expanded, stepped apron, the removal of the pews in the north aisle and the provision of underfloor heating and carpeting there and across the foot of the chancel steps. The interior is a fine space with the roof supported on alternating braced collar and king-post trusses. Internally there are many good monuments with associations to local residents including a tomb chest with a carved effigy of William Sandys of Conishead Priory (d. 1559). The interior fittings in oak including the finely carved choir stalls are of note.
