Summary Description

The Quinquennial survey highlights the fascinating history of the site. The current building is of 1826 with alterations in 1926 but there has been a church here for over 900 years. The design is Norman with a low tower that can appear curiously detached. One could be forgiven for thinking that the structure had been part of a crenulated pele tower. The decorated tracery also makes a strong statement both externally and, surprisingly, internally. The apse and roof are of the 1926 alterations but the alterations were obviously extensive and other elements (perhaps the porch) also date from this time. It is constructed of local stone with sandstone detailing. Internally the re-set Norman Typanum in the south aisle has a figure of Christ with raised hands and an inscription to the founder and builder of the church, Gamel and Hubert respectively. The oil lamps fixed to the walls are a surprising survival. Some modern stained glass.
