Summary Description

Built in 1886-6 the design is attributed to J Murchie of Carlisle in the Quinquennial Inspection Report and to Ewan Christian by Pevsner. If it is the latter then this may have an impact on significance following further investigation. Ewan Christian is a well known architect and was president of the RIBA in 1884; he is most famous for restoration of Carlisle Cathedral although he was also responsible for more than 2,000 other ecclesiastical buildings. The church of St Peter is constructed of the locally distinctive red sandstone and has a slate roof. The composition is expertly handled and has a rusticated stone plinth with ashlar above. The bell turret ‘emerges’ from the large expanse of roof that sweeps down to encompass the projecting transepts. Internally it is an airy space with a wagon roof and very simple and elegant arched trusses. Natural daylight is never an issue here and it illuminates the quality of the timber fittings which appear original.
