Summary Description

The first church was founded in 1577 but the present building is at least the third on the site (in fact the corner stones of the previous church are still visible in the churchyard). It was built in 1907 to a design by Austin & Paley and the composition displays many Arts & Crafts features in its fine and honest detailing (although the listing description describes it as Gothic Revival). A wonderfully light and sculptural interior space; the massive stone piers appear to be drawn up into the arches which are moulded into the walls. As at St George's in Barrow there are two chancel arches to the south and one to the north; typical of Austin and Paley. The contrast of the bare sandstone walls and the honey coloured timber roof and fittings is very distinctive and adds a feeling of calm to the interior. Apparently the pews date to the 1950's. The paired trusses are also interesting with King and Queen posts and collars. Aisles and vestry added and the west end completed 1928.
