Summary Description

The earliest purpose-built Anglican church in the new town of Barrow. James Ramsden, superintendent of the Railway, devised a plan for the town and there are few planned towns in England. Ramsden became the first Mayor of Barrow and conceived the idea of the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, which became Vickers in 1897. St George's was also Ramsden's suggestion and the south chapel is named after him. It was built in 1859- 61 by the architect E.G Paley using a striking combination of blue slate and red sandstone details. The north aisle was added in 1867. It is interesting to note and compare churches designed by this famous firm of architects; a single arch to the organ on the north and a double arch to the chapel on the south, as Pevsner says, is "a motif which Paley and Austin were to make much of". More recently (1981-82) the church has been remodelled to provide a church hall in the former North Aisle and the Altar has been repositioned at the front of the Sanctuary.
