Summary Description

Unusually this Georgian (1794) church has not been radically altered in the C19th although restoration work was carried out in 1879. This single chamber church with simple sanctuary recess has been built on the site of an earlier church and incorporates the C14th tower of the earlier structure. There is some evidence of the foundations of the chancel of the early church at the east end. The ground floor of the tower now accommodates the baptistery. External wall surfaces of the church are of roughly coursed large blocks of stone varying in colour from pink to grey/buff between projecting chamfered quoins and projecting window surrounds. The projecting quoins and surrounds and general lack of care in the coursing of stonework suggest that rendering of the wall surfaces may originally have been intended. The cavetto moulded tabling course retuning beneath the corbel stones of the gable ends is an unusual and interesting detail although the coping stones have been removed and slating now projects to the gable wall face. The tower masonry is of coursed roughly squared local stone. The two light segmental arched window to the base of the tower and the entrance porch are C19th and constructed using the red sandstone typical of that period. Roof surfaces are of random and diminishing slate probably from the Burlington quarries. Internally surfaces are of plain plaster with a flat plain plastered ceiling between the downstand tie beams of the roof trusses. There is little ornamentation. There are various C18th & C19th wall plaques and one C16th brass inscription plate.
