Summary Description

A late C12th / C13th church with extensive and rather heavy handed C19th restoration and alteration by Ewan Christian (1876). The chancel has been extensively rebuilt and altered in the C19th with no regard for the general character of the church. The steep roof pitch of the chancel cuts the coping line of the nave roof in a visually chaotic manner. The early nave arcades of pointed arches are carried on cylindrical shafts and capitals to the south side and octagonal shafts and capitals to the north side. The profile of the capitals to both north and south arcades is identical. Finely carved responds carry the inner order of the western arches of the arcades. There is a C13th piscina immediately below the respond on the north side. Two and three light cusped windows to the aisles are C19th. The lower part of one of the early window openings is visible in the south aisle. Roof trusses to the Nave are C16th with one truss dated and inscribed 1585. Externally the early walling stone is of random coursed roughly squared local stone of colour varying from buff to pink. C19th work has been carried out using uniformly red sandstone probably imported from a more distant source. C19th walling stone is red random coursed squared rock faced ashlar with red sandstone window surrounds. There is a C19th twin bellcote above the west gable wall. All roof surfaces are slated in random and diminishing courses, probably from the Burlington quarries.
