Summary Description

Built 1880-82 by J.B. Cory St. Peter’s is typical of many C19th churches with wide single space nave, chancel, vestry to the south side and entrance porch to the north west corner. There is a single bellcote above the west gable wall. Externally the walls are of Lakeland slate rubble walling with red sandstone window and door surrounds and gable copings. The roof is of slate laid in random and diminishing courses. Internally plain plaster surfaces are relieved by red sandstone tooled stonework to quoins and arches to openings. The timber roof structure is exposed. The interior is extremely gloomy being lit only by extremely narrow lancet windows. The windows are, however, of particular interest since they are glazed with decorative stained glass lights by Jane Grey (1975). The windows are a particularly fine set and one is a memorial to Lt. Commander Willian Hugh Parkin and the officers and men of H.M.S. Glorious.
