Summary Description

A unique feature of St. Oswald’s is the remote C18th (restored C19th) belfry located about 200 yds. distant on the hill above the church. The church is of Early C12th origins with late C12th, early C13th and early C16th additions. The church comprises nave and chancel with north and south gabled aisles. The chancel arch (C13th) has clearly been raised, presumably when the roof of the nave was raised to accommodate Tudor clerestory lights. The arch is founded on a C12th plinth. There are Tudor arched triple lancets to the chancel and south aisle and the west gable wall of the north aisle. Unusually, it is the north door that has been adopted as the entrance, protected by a timber framed porch of 1523 while the more richly moulded south door, probably C13th was abandoned and blocked. The entrance porch is of interest. The ‘rafter’ members of the frame are crooked timbers of substantial size supported on posts jointed to receive the wall plate and braced with massive crooked braces with peg joints. A classic mediaeval timber structure. Masonry construction generally is of red sandstone, random coursed. The roofs are slated in random and diminishing courses with rebated copings over C19th exposed timber roof structures and panelled oak ceiling of 1847.
