Summary Description

Built in 1864 the church of St. John the Evangelist is an unexceptional church typical of the period. Unusually for Carlisle the church is built of a grey sandstone. Walling stone is of rock faced ashlar with moulded stonework, quoins and copings having a regular tooled finish. Much of the stone detailing, particularly internally, is of high quality. Externally the stonework has suffered significant loss due to sand blasting during the 1997 renovation work. There is a belfry, disproportionately small in relation to the size of the church and, unusually, located at the north east corner of the chancel. A church hall and sports hall have been built at the east end of the church blocking light from the east window. The east window is now artificially lit when the church is in use. When not lit the dark windows detract significantly form the experience of the church.
