Summary Description

St. Andrew's retains significant elements of the C12th church, notably the west gable wall which is of considerable thickness, and the chancel arch. The gable wall carries a double bellcote surmounted by a stone St. Andrew's cross. The south aisle and aisle arcade are C13th with double trefoil windows to the south wall and C19th double lancet window to the east end of the aisle. The C12th chancel has been altered in the C18th with a lintel over the blocked priest door of 1732. The earlier parts of the church are of red sandstone roughly squared and coursed and incorporating reclaimed stones from earlier structures. Later alterations are in a buff coloured sandstone. The roofs over the nave, south aisle, porch and vestry are covered with a grey Westmoreland slate. The Chancel has been slated with blue/grey welsh slate. The interior of the church displays a C15th roof structure with four king post trusses with secondary raking braces. Much of the north wall has been rebuilt in the C19th with C19th lancet windows. The vestry is C19th but incorporates a C13th lancet window. St. Andrew's has been extensively altered and repaired at several periods in its history. However successive layers of alteration have enhanced rather than detracted from an important sense of place.
