Summary Description

A wonderful church that incorporates fine architecture, rescued historic details and magnificent art. Built in the early sixteenth century it combines both Decorated and Perpendicular styles. Although the chancel was substantially rebuilt in 1872 and a new vestry added last century, the church retains a great historic character and presence. Carvings from the former Priory are incorporated into the exterior of the altered chancel. The hexagonal tower, built in 1790, sits on the site of the medieval porch. The Howard Chapel, built in 1791 over the family mausoleum in the north east corner of the church is a fine Gothic Revival structure that includes one of the earliest cast/wrought iron east windows in the country and a fine rib vaulted ceiling. The Chapel contains the magnificent Nollekens white marble statue of Maria Howard who died in childbirth. The statue, Faith, is of national significance and such was its notoriety that it became the subject of a Wordsworth sonnet. The church includes a thirteenth century font, a carved fifteenth century tomb chest with alabaster figures and fragments of silvered medieval stained glass.
