Summary Description

St Mary's is a robust and early example of Edward Paley's work built in Gothic Revival style. The church replaces earlier buildings of which no structure survives. Constructed through the patronage of the Johnson's of Castlesteads, in part as a family mausoleum, the church is asymmetrical with the northern aisle creating a shadowed recess lit by low lancet windows. In contrast, the nave is well lit through high lancet windows set into the south wall. Stout, round columns surmounted by pointed arches interact to create interesting spaces. The nave roof is exposed pine with king posts adding to the visual fragmentation of the void. The internal decoration is fine and dominated by bright, glowing, colours introduced through the William Wailes stained glass and an immensely attractive 1880 alabaster framed floral mosaic reredos. Plaques from the earlier church are mounted onto the walls and the fragment of a Saxon/Viking cross is positioned at the base of the font. The simple but attractive hearse house in the churchyard is built in contrasting grey sandstone and predates the Paley church.
