Summary Description

Built in 1830, St Mary's replaces an earlier, possibly Norman church that was probably positioned to the south of the current building. Located in splendid isolation overlooking the pennines and lakes fells, this is a large church set amongst scattered farmsteads. The site was probably a gathering place associated with the nearby St Bridget's Well in ancient times giving rise to a sequence of places of worship. It incorporates some material, font and aedicule wall plaques, from its immediate predecessor. Built in Late Georgian Gothic style with its tower, pinnacles (dislodged in the 1979 earthquake), interwoven tracery together with an elegant, spacious and extremely comfortable interior that appears to conform to the Golden Rectangle. This is reinforced by the absence of columns. Alterations in the late nineteenth century removed original square pews and introduced central and narrow side aisles together with a screened vestry in part of the chancel, probably diminishing the orderliness of the earlier design. Insertion of stained glass medallions in grisaille evocative of high gothic allows the church to be swamped with light. Attractive carved door casing. The painted square moulded ceiling is dominated by a central plaster rose. Large and interesting graveyard with ancient stones.
