Summary Description

The Church represents a robust example of Gothic Revival designed by Anthony Salvin, an early Ecclesiologist. It has a substantial but quite squat two stage stone tower with a battlement parapet, possibly reflecting Salvin’s passion for medieval military architecture as much as the style of the church.. The geometric tracery and shape of the east window reflects the late thirteenth century Second Pointed styles adopted by Revivalists during this period. The rough red dressed sandstone building has a graduated Burlington blue grey slate roof. The church was built through the generosity of George Head Head, a renowned Quaker who placed the church on a dramatic valley promontory at the northern entrance into the village where it would have made a striking feature in the landscape. There is a simple interior, attractively decorated, with little ornamentation. The altar rail and oak screens continue the Gothic Revival into the interior that is graced by fine stained glass windows including a number thought to be by the great Gothic innovator John Powell. There is a window manufactured by William Morris and Company, possibly designed by J H Deare. Its horizontal sectioned sky is outstanding. Substantial effort has been put into rebuilding the steps leading up the hill to the church.
