Summary Description

An unpretentious village church, St Mary's sits comfortably within the settlement that gathers around a crossroads, providing a visual anchor to the south end of Hethersgill. The church was built as a chapel of ease in 1876 to the design of Haberschon and Brock. It is built in red rustic sandstone with a moss covered slate roof surmounted by a cote containing a bell by J Warner and Sons. The warm red sandstone extends to the interior with the flagged floor in the nave and polished font. Although simply designed, the church has an extremely robust appearance, its solidity being reinforced by the substantial twin buttresses that lean against the west end fragmenting the group of windows. Internally the building is calm, neat and undemanding. The underside of the scissor truss roof in the chancel is glimpsed through a latticework of timbers adding visual interest. The east windows by John Scott of Carlisle introduce colour and craft. The redundant boiler house and its chimney spread the volume of the building and add a visually curious domestic element. Although some details are showing signs of wear, such as broken decorative ridge tiles, the interior of the church and its grounds are cared for with great affection.
