Summary Description

Built in 1890 to the design of George Oliver, the church reflects a predominantly neo-Decorated style although Pevsner is unhappy with the mix of historic references. It replaces an earlier, more modest, church that may have been one of a sequence going back to early medieval times tucked behind the cluster of buildings at the heart of the settlement. The church does not incorporate earlier fabric, other than monuments, but Norman details can be seen in an adjacent farm building that, given its siting and appearance, could have been a fortified vicarage. Paradoxically, the church might be seen as a representation of its earlier incarnations; possibly corrupted architecture, but interesting! The three stage battlemented tower is lodged on the corner of the building where it acts as a visual anchor drawing views on the approach to the church through a group of village buildings. Internally, the church is well lit by the large four bay clear glass west window. Unsigned stained glass adds colour, but the polychromatic tiled floor in the chancel is more eye-catching. There is a grave slab in the cellar and an eighteenth century plaque on the external wall.
