Summary Description

In spite of the ravages of border warfare, the church incorporates a late thirteenth century east gable with its slender pointed hooded widows set into a thick wall. The remainder was substantially built in grey sandstone in 1792 (datestone on tower) in a peculiarly ad hoc fashion with a tiered stone tower positioned asymmetrically against the west elevation and the bellcote added on top of a red sandstone chimney flue type projection attached to the upper level. Much of the stone comes from nearby Banna fort with some interesting features including sharpening marks. Galleries supported on Tuscan style columns that were built along three sides of the nave in 1792 were altered with the removal of two sides in 1901. At that time the nave was lowered and re-roofed and new lancet windows were inserted along the south elevation- the north, extremely exposed, side being unfenestrated. Modern stained glass (2001) in the east windows is uncomplicated and attractive incorporating motifs from the cross. The eighteenth century timberwork is important and of good quality. It introduces panelling and patterns that create interest and intimacy. Recent renovations have temporarily exposed some hidden structural elements such as rough timber door lintels and rubble walls. The outstanding historic feature is the remarkable carved seventh century cross shaft and base in the church yard marking Bewcastle as a place of Christian worship for over thirteen hundred years.
