Summary Description

A wonderful and visually strong church that was started in 1609, the massive tower being added in 1680. It was built through national subscription on the orders of James I replacing a decayed medieval church. It is designed in Perpendicular style, similar to Wool churches, with battlemented parapets, three light clerestory windows and two and three light aisle windows. The tower, which is supported by huge stepped Perpendicular diagonal buttresses, is crowned by extremely modest corner pinnacles that are somewhat out of scale with the rest of the building. The East Window was removed in 1868 to become a garden folly near Carlisle and replaced by a double bar tracery arrangement. The interior is interesting with columns that may, in part, derive from the predecessor building. The Baptistery is corralled in the south west corner where it is overlooked by a three light stained glass window by Mayer of Munich with its hallmark jewel like appearance through the use of dazzling contrasts of primary colours. The early twentieth century Arts and Crafts pulpit and choir stall are exceptionally fine. The churchyard is extensive and contains a C12 cross bound-up in a Victorian cage and the grave of James I’s favourite jester. The boundary wall has interesting nineteenth century wrought and cast iron lights.
