Summary Description

This small and simple box of a church is hidden away amongst trees on a bend in the network of minor roads connecting the miniscule settlements of the coast adjacent to The Wash. Holbeach St Matthew is typical of such settlements, which developed after the draining of the fens in the early 19th century. Built in 1868-9 to a design by the prolific Victorian architect Ewan Christian, who also designed the nearby Holbeach St Mark and several other churches in the area, all within a period of five years or so. Unaltered since.
