Summary Description

Small textile mill town on the south bank of the Calder valley. Medieval origins as one of two chapelries of Halifax (5 miles away). Town growth in 18th century and industrial growth spread in 19th and 20th centuries. St Mary's church is essentially Perpendicular gothic, although Norman origin. West tower c.1490. Chancel arch interior rebuilt using 12th century stone. 15th century stained glass in the east window.
