Summary Description

This church’s oldest feature is a remnant of a Norman window in the South wall of the nave, dated to c. 1095. It is thus among the oldest churches in Surrey and is Grade 1 listed. Originally a simple building of flint and Reigate stone it was expanded over the centuries, being a manor of Waltham Abbey. The church was originally dedicated to St. Leonard. Its most notable internal feature is the wall paintings of two angels above the chancel arch. The biggest change for Caterham was the coming of the railways in 1856. The population grew quickly and it was decided to build a new church, dedicated to St, Mary the Virgin. This church was consecrated in 1866. What to do with the old church was a difficult question. Today St. Lawrence’s is used for worship at least twice a month and for concerts and exhibitions. Its grounds are well maintained and are used by the parish, and contain the recently restored war memorial.
