Summary Description

St. James is impressively sited on rising ground and when viewed from the south-east it is possible to appreciate the grouping of the tower as it rises between the gables of the south transept and the vestry. The dominant external feature is the wide expanse of tiled roof, into which, at a later date, four dormer windows were introduced to relieve its severe lines and to give additional light to the interior. The church is of brick with brown sandstone facings, partly coursed and partly random: the dressings and the cap of the low spire are of limestone.
