Summary Description

One would be hard pressed to find architectural or historical significance in St. Mark’s Belah. The significance of this church lies elsewhere. Built within the economic constraints of the early 1950’s to provide a social focus for the surrounding council estate, under construction at that time, the building was clearly conceived as a practical low budget response to the needs of the community. The building doubles as community hall and church with the focus for each function at either end. At one end there is a stage closed off when not in use by a sliding/folding screen. At the other end, housed in the square tower, is the sanctuary, closed off by sliding folding doors when not in use. When both ends are closed off the hall can provide for a variety of functions. At the stage end there are toilets and kitchen, storage and vestry. Externally the building is rather vulnerable to vandalism. Internally order prevails. This building could be seen as a model of functionality.
