Summary Description

With no two elevations the same, like a compass this church points to village, old school, patron and prevailing weather. Most memorable are the pair of eroded, horizontally rusticated gate piers to the north entrance, like geological core samples, surmounted by running greyhounds, each propped on a capital ‘S’ of the Sleddall family. Though allegedly the 1739 chapel was ‘extended’, the church today is of 1829, retaining chapel characteristics but with height, tower and increased capacity, symbolic of a move from patronage to ‘free and unappropriated’ attendance; at least a selection of pre-1829 artefacts survive to animate the plain interior. The high west gallery is elegantly supported on clustered columns; behind it, a room (a practical gain), and above, a lay-in grid suspended ceiling (an aesthetic disaster), both of 1989. The sanctuary is unusually small – an alcove – but, behind a semi-circular chancel area, is distinctive (and was previously more so, from an old photograph). The east window by H Gustave Miller (c.1902) is a fine focal point, but deteriorating.
