Summary Description

The church was built in 1874-77 to a design by Paley & Austin and is on a grand scale, perhaps reflecting the rapid expansion of Millom at the time. The thoughtfully proportioned tower and spire dominate the town and the distinctive red sandstone ensures its prominence. The interior space is just as grand with a simple wagon roof although here there is something disconcerting about the proportions; perhaps it is the ratio of excessive height to width that is slightly uncomfortable. However, the building exhibits the fine quality in its stone detailing that one comes to expect in a Paley and Austin church. Norman Nicholson, the writer and poet, was born and lived all his life in Millom. There is a modern window commemorating his life which was designed by Christine Boyce who has carried out other local commissions; the imagery she has used here is based on Nicholson's poems and prose; there are also links to local scenes. The set piece of the church, with all its original fittings, as designed by the architects is actually enhanced by this modern intervention.
